Abi Smuts

Political editor and Senior Labour writer

Hi, I’m Abi, a final year at Uni of Exeter studying International Relations and English. To me, it was only in A Levels that I realised how important politics was, when I was stuck in my male-only, extremely conservative Politics class having to constantly justify and defend my opinions to them.

Although I am joining the Labour writing team, I am first and foremost a Green voter! I consider the climate emergency to be our greatest threat and a microcosm of how our society operates at this moment. It encompasses environmental racism and climate injustice whilst reiterating neoliberal capitalism’s prioritisation of profit over all else. With this view, I don’t see how anyone could not be passionate when it comes to politics, it’s an integral part of everyday life. I strongly believe in the importance in political education and understanding; increased participation is key for a more fair and just society.

Whilst I would label myself as someone with distinctly leftist policies – believing that there is currently no ethical consumption under globalised neoliberal capitalism – I am still learning, trying to always challenge my confirmation bias. Therefore, I am super excited to join POI and look forward to the myriad of opinions and debates!
