Zoe Olsen-Groome

Junior Labour writer

I have just graduated with a History degree from the University of Exeter and am about to start my Masters there in Conflict, Security, and Development. I will also be taking on the roles of Welfare Officer in the Politics Society and Vice-President for Coppafeel’s Exeter Uni Boob Team.

My introduction to politics coincided with my development of interest in history. As I started to become interested in more recent history, eventually settling in the 20th century, my passion for politics also began to emerge. As I studied events which continue to have political, economic, and social repercussions today, such as the Israeli-Palestinian war of 1947-48 or the Salvadoran Civil War in the 1980s, I began to become more involved in politics, wanting to further study and address these issues which are often misrepresented and reported on in the media.

My political opinion is always evolving as I try to listen more to people around me who are more informed, largely by experience. One person I admire is Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez whose passion and empathy is something I aspire to match. Another is Akala, whose eloquent analyses and arguments make politics more accessible and less intimidating to anyone trying to become more politically conscious.

Mental wellbeing, gender relations, and humanitarian crises are just a few topics that I want to cover through POI and I look forward to having many interesting debates and discussions about them. Through POI I hope to develop and build my understanding and communication of political ideas and hopefully contribute to making politics more empathetic.
